Who Makes Sewing Machines?

What does a sewing machine cost now? Prices vary from about $75 to over $12,000.

What are the major kinds of machines on the market today? You will find a group of low end throw away models, low end mechanical machines, midline electronic machines, fully computerized machines, and combination computerized sewing and embroidery machines. Generally, the more a machine does, the more it costs. The better the machine, the more it costs.

What are the different brands of sewing machines?

Generic means general or standard. Brands like Kenmore, Necchi, Bernette, Simplicity, and White brands are general sewing machines manufactured and supplied to the promotional company with the specified generic label.

The Baby Lock brand started as an advanced line of home sergers in 1964. It is currently owned by Tacony Corporation in Fenton, Missouri. It has developed into a very popular sewing machine line offering some of the most advanced sewing machines. Baby Lock works with Brother International to produce many of its sewing machines, but continues to make its own premium sergers.

The consumer electronics giant, Brother International, markets two brand lines. The Brother line is a low end product line sold through Walmart and other mass merchants. The Pacesetter By Brother line is a top quality line sold through independent dealers. It also produces standard machines for generic brands.

Bernina is the luxury sewing machine made in Switzerland. Customer loyalty is the highest in the industry. It is famous for its solid dependability, advanced features, and innovation. It has been a leader in the industry introducing the first zig zag, hem machine, and Microsoft Windows operating system. Its newest model 830 has the largest stitch offering on the market, measures 12 arm, and is full of advanced features. The cost is $12,000.

Elna Sewing Machines is somewhat of a step child line. Originally, the Elna line was made in Switzerland, but in recent years financial pressures have hurt production and sales. Recently, Janome purchased the company and is in the process of developing the line as a distinctively feminine styled sewing machine line. Within the near future, Elna will be designed jointly by Swiss and Janome designers, but providing a distinctive Elna machine line.

Husqavarna, also known as Viking, is a company that traces its roots to Sweden. It is an historic line of machines will known for durability and simplicity. Today it is owned by a conglomerate that also owns Singer and Pfaff. It is currently produced in China.

Formerly, the New Home brand was marketed in the United States. Today Janome of Japan is the largest of all sewing machine manufacturers boasting over 50,000,000 machines made. The Memory Craft series has been very popular because of the advanced robotic incorporated in the stitch control system. The company makes many generic sewing machine lines for other companies.

The Pfaff brand is traced back to 1862 and Georg Michael Pfaff of Germany. This premium line of sewing machines gained a strong reputation of German engineering. The brand still maintains the flavor of the tradition, while it is manufactured in China with the Singer and Husqavarna lines.

The most popular brand of sewing machines is Singer. Since 1851, the Singer brand has been almost synonymous with sewing machines. During the early years the I.M. Singer & Company overwhelmed the market, while hundreds of other companies came and went. Even today it continues to be a popular brand manufactured in China.
