Building Relationships and List Building Is Where You Should Start

By Stu McLaren

If you don't have a big reserve of money to draw from to start you business, how can you get started, bring in revenue without paying an arm and a leg? This is a question I'm often asked and I have experienced this myself starting my own business.

Now, everyone's situation is different and therefore there is not one set answer. What I will suggest is some ideas and insights that I used when I was starting my own business, deep in student debt and right out of university.

I just graduated university and marketing products was something that I did not have any experience with. I did not have any money and I did not have any contact so what that presented is a humongous opportunity to be extremely creative and that is what you really have to start tapping into because I do not know about you, but I am most creative when I am most desperate and that is a good thing.

Getting started will always present obstacles, which can be overcome creatively. Getting people's attention, building relationships, creating products and marketing those products can be completed by finding creative ways to do them.

Building momentum from your creativity is the key to this scenario. When you are first starting out you have to really think about what is the most important aspect to you at that time. Generating revenue? Building a list? Creating and marketing your products?

You have to really get focused on what it is that you need at this particular time in your career and then start utilizing your creativity to maximize that. So for me in the beginning, was revenue important? Yes, but it was not as important as building a profitable business for the long term.

Long-term gains were more important than early profits, so I sacrificed them. The method I did to do this was giving my time in exchange for products, JV opportunities, services, all different kinds of things.

I utilized the time I did have and started volunteering at and for anyone I could. Any help someone needed marketing, I would do. I would write for people. I would volunteer at events. Although this did not give me immediate profits, what I was doing was building relationships with key people, who would help my career in the long run.

When first starting out, you will have to work a little harder and may have to be more creative then others to achieve what you want. What you have to do first though, is to figured out exactly what you want.

Otherwise, you are just going to be spinning in circles. I want to encourage you when you are starting out to get very clear on what it is that you are looking to do. Are you looking to generate revenue? If so, then you need to find creative ways to generate revenue in a short period of time.

If you are not so much concerned about generating revenue immediately but you are more interested in developing relationships for long-term profitability, then you want to focus on creative ways to connect with people, to build those relationships and to get to know others.

It all comes down to figuring out what you should be focusing on right now. Building your list, may be your priority. If so, set your attention on that and find creative ways to build your list.

So number one, get very clear on what it is that you are looking for and then number two, I want to encourage you to just tap in to your creativity because not having money available, in my opinion, is not an excuse that you can let yourself get away with.? It is just a matter of using some creativity to get what it is that you want and there is always some type of a solution. It is just a matter of being able to find it.
