How to Market Yourself Online as a Freelancer

By Jason Pearson

When people set out to become freelancers they usually have a general idea of what services they would like to provide. Many people do not put enough thought into how they will advertise these services, however. Knowing how to sell yourself as a freelancer online will make or break your business.

Begin with a concrete outline of what services you will provide and at what rate. Decide whether you will charge by the hour or by the project, for example. You may soon realize that each project warrants its own pricing as each customer expects a different product than the last.

Some obstacles to beginning freelancers include not knowing how much to charge for their services and not actually getting paid. First, join both local and national organizations in your particular field. They can provide sample rate sheets and put you in contact with legal help if you should need it.

Focusing on the right way to advertise your services is another challenge for new freelancers. If you are offering exclusively online services, your marketing should be almost one hundred percent on the web too. If not, your internet marketing plan should mesh well with any print or other media ads you design.

It is essential that you start a website to give people a place to visit when they are considering purchasing your services. The ideas for what to include on a website are endless. Needles to say, it should be polished and informative.

Choosing the correct colors and a simple layout are all it takes to start a website. Focus on straightforward content and skip the flashy graphics. Once you have a little more experience you can update your website based on customer feedback.

Another important step when you are starting out is contacting other freelancers in your business as often as possible. When you can benefit from other people's experience, your path is made easier. They may even be able to tip you off on possible clients in your area.

Having fortitude, clear goals and simple plans makes a great start for any freelancer. It is a very different thing to experience rejection when it is your own business because everything about the business reflects who you are as a professional. Rely on the quality services you provide and don't let a few unsavory characters hinder you in achieving your goals.
