Video Blogging, is it Right for You?

By Damian Benko

Video blogging, aka Vlogging, have many things that are better than traditional text-based blogs. It's not surprising that more and more people are moving to this form of blogging. These new types of blogs are much better for getting and holding the attention of your browsers. People are even more likely to become drawn to the video content of a vlog over that of an ordinary written posting on a the typical blog.

The more people you can get coming to you site and keep them coming back, the better chance you'll have the best form of advertising, word of mouth, take place. This will ultimately then bring in more traffic to your site and of course, more money in your wallet if you're monetizing your site, which you should be doing!

Some disadvantages do exist when considering video blogging over the normal written blogs. These are easily overcome however. The biggest problem most consider is hosting your vlog yourself. This can require a lot of server space, and that can definitely make it tougher to get started. This is only an issue if you decide host your vlog yourself. The easiest and most affordable way, free, to host your site is to use services like Google Video, Viddler or YouTube. Then all you do is copy and paste the embed code on your site and you're done. Let the big boys handle the bandwidth issues and costs for you.

For more control you can use a service like Amazon's storage service called S3. You pay a small fee based on the size of file and bandwidth used. The fee is extremely affordable at about .10/GB to upload and then .17/GB for bandwidth usage. This is the best way to host your video if you want complete control and it won't cost you an arm and a leg either.

Another disadvantage is that it can take more time to process and upload a video file than it does to dash off a quick bit of text. This means that running and updating a video blog can be quite a bit of work if you're not really familiar with shooting and editing video.

The truth is that once you get used to it, then it really is pretty simple. The hardest part for many is simply going through with the shooting process.

Some also get frustrated with computers and slow connections, which will cause some individuals to get sick and tired of uploading or playback issues from time to time.

Even though most have good internet connections and the equipment in order to watch videos on their computers, you still need to think about who will be coming to your blog. For example, many baby boomers who may not be that familiar about the online world yet, a video blog may not be the best choice for your blog. You need to always take your market into consideration before deciding what to do.

Either way you choose to go, a regular/traditional or a video blog or even a mix of the two, like I do, just remember to offer your people good solid information that will ultimately help them. And of course, have fun and be yourself!
