Let's face it, no one likes to talk about the possibility of layoffs. We hear the whispers, and our stress level rises. How do you face this career crisis? Are there ways to turn a layoff into strengthening experience?
One problem with job layoffs is that the market tends to be flooded with other, maybe from your same company, who are looking for similar jobs. They may have the same skill set as you, making the competition intense.
How can you reduce the stress that comes with joining the unemployment line? There are many steps you can take to clear your mind of negative thinking, improve your skills, and make this unfortunate situation an opportunity.
We don't always know when a layoff is looming. There may be signs: a reduction in customers, fewer tasks making their way into your in-box, maybe even a comment or two from co-workers that start you thinking. But the truth is, we don't know for sure until it happens.
Sometimes there are other indicators that the office or factory is on a downward spiral. Behavior changes in management is one example. Managers can turn to micro managing in an attempt to gain more control over their situation. Sometimes they turn to micro managing just to appear to be busy and needed, in an attempt to ward off their own potential layoff.
When you start to see those warning signs you should start to consider the possibilities. This is a good time to update your resume. Include not just job skills but other qualities as well, like your great attendance record, or your positive reviews. Think about the successes you have experienced, and be willing to share those with potential employers.
Find ways to empower yourself as well. If you find it difficult to think positive about your resume, that's okay. Strengthening yourself should be an ongoing, life long service to yourself. Find a method or program to show you ways to think clearer and feel better, such as EFT or Reiki training. Any wellness or self improvement class will pay off.
It is possible to take the unfortunate layoff experience and turn it into an opportunity for self improvement or even a career shift. Take the time to focus on how this change can serve you, and empower yourself with those amazing thought shifting techniques you have learned. Career Crisis' are not the end of the world.
