Optimizing Your Site Will Increase Your Search Engine Ranking

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a necessary tool that you should apply, if you want people to find your websites. By applying SEO, it can mean the difference in your website showing up on the first few pages of a search engine or the hundredth page. A website that does not show up in the first few pages of a search engine can find it hard to get visitors because most people only search the top three to five page results for their keywords.

How Do You Apply SEO?

You can pay someone to do SEO on your site or you can do it yourself. If you have a big website that is going to be a big money maker, you may want to shell out the hundreds of dollars necessary to have professionals take care of your website creation and optimization. If you have a small to medium website, and have intermediate internet skills, you should handle the search engine optimization yourself. It is really not that difficult and it should be done if you want the search engines to correctly index your site.

SEO can be applied by getting links that point back to your website. This can be done with article writing and article content submission. If you have really great posts on your website, others will voluntarily link to you, so that they can provide new information to their own visitors. You can also pay websites to place your links on their site and this works to have one way links and as a bonus, website visitors.

Another ingredient in effective SEO is making sure that your meta tags reflect your website and page content. Each web page needs to have a descriptive title. The description meta tag should contain your primary keywords for the search engines to find. The description should also be something that will make readers want to visit your website.

Another way to implement SEO is with well-written content. You can use pictures and videos, but your site will still need to have actual textual content. Search engines won't recognize audio and video files as useful content, even though your visitors will. The SE's can only read text so be sure you have adequate text content for them. Then, you can add pictures and videos for "real" visitors.

The "Do Nots" of SEO

Do not use the same keyword repetitively. Although keywords are necessary to having a good ranking with the search engines, they have become wise to people who try to cheat the system by repeatedly using a keyword over and over again, for no good reason.

Avoid the use of text that is colored to blend into the background. Webmasters caught on to the fact that if they place keywords on their websites and match it to the background, a visitor cannot see it, but a search engine spider can. After an update, these websites were penalized because they were once again trying to cheat the search engines.

Don't try to cheat the system by using your own (or other websites') content on multiple pages of your site. This did work at one time but the search engines are now smarter than that. You site will be penalized for having duplicate content. And, if you use another website's content, you could be charged with plagerism.

Using keywords that make no sense to the topic of a website is another way webmasters have tried to cheat the system. They place a large list of keywords at the bottom of the web pages. They believe the spiders will find them and rank their site for more words. Not true. You might just get your site banned instead.
