6 Ways to Not Lose Your Downline

By Matt Hellstrom

How do you keep people from dropping out of your network marketing downline? This is probably the number one question of network marketers, and there are a few things you can do to help you keep more of your recruits for longer.

As a leader in your company, your main goal is to retain your current distributors so you don't always have to be signing up new ones. The longer they stick around, the bigger your check is. But just how can you do that? Here are six ideas that might help you to succeed in this area.

1. It's important to pick the right company. You're new recruits will stay involved and excited if they're part of a company they can be proud of, and that has good products. These 2 aspects of the company will help them to weather the startup pains all new distributors face.

2. When you sign them up, make sure they buy your companies most expensive option. That way they'll be more likely to stick around because they have that financial investment. My company has a package that costs $1200, containing all of the products they offer plus many additional sales tools and event passes. My new recruit can try everything that applies to her, and retail the products she doesn't need.

3. Show them how to monetize. If you can help them earn some money right away, it will help them to sustain longer. There are various ways to do this, but the one I like is affiliate marketing. This is the process of promoting other people's products and earning a commission on anything that is sold by that person to someone you send to their website.

4. Have a relationship with them. If you want your new distributor to stick around for awhile, they need to know that you're aware of what they're doing. Having personal contact with them will develop a sense of loyalty, and foster accountability. On the internet, you can sign up lots of people, but you'll lose them just as fast if you don't get to know them. If you're not comfortable with talking to people, network marketing might not be for you.

5. Give them an idea how to get going. A plan. Don't deceive them, or over-inflate their potential earnings. Be as honest and realistic as possible. Most people aren't going to retire in 2 years, or be making $5000/month in 6 months, so don't tell them they will. It only gives network marketing, your company, and you a bad name, and doesn't help the new recruit at all.

6. Don't assume that because you like to do recruit one way that your new distributor will do the same. Every one is different, and if you can help them to discover what works for them you'll be much better off in the long run. Just because you like to work online doesn't mean they necessarily will - maybe they'll be great at making cold calls or in their warm market. Keep an open mind!

Remember that your goal is to keep your new distributor around as long as possible. The quicker they're able to be successful, the more likely they are to stick around. Every month they stay involved is a month closer to success for them (and you). Plus, it's another month of income!
